How to Clean A Composite Deck
There are many different types of composite decks that manufacturers produce so when attempting to clean a composite deck with a pressure washer, always seek manufacturer recommendations before beginning any project. You may recognize your deck material in this top eight list:
- TimberTech (AZEK)
- Envision Composite Lumber
- CertainTeed EverNew
It is imperative and crucial before beginning any pressure washing or soft washing job that the technician inspects the composite deck to be cleaning before pressure washing. Safety is always paramount when using any high-powered gas power tool so always wear proper ear protection as well as proper safety glasses. Never operate a pressure washer with children or pets around and make sure your equipment is always up to manufacturer recommendations with maintenance.
When inspecting the composite deck there should be special attention made to surfaces that could possibly be damaged or chipping on any way.
Using high-pressure tips such as a red tip or white tip is not recommended and will leave the surface damaged and etched. Red tip nozzles are zero-degree nozzles that emit the highest amount of pressure from the water stream coming out of the pressure washer wand. White tip pressure washing nozzles are 25 degrees and also emit high amounts of pressure. These two tips are the most commonly used tips that are used by uneducated homeowners and operators. The safest way to clean a composite deck is by using algaecide and fungicide soaps and detergents. Anytime you are using sodium hydrochloride and other cleaning agents it is highly recommended that you water-down and pre-soak all of the vegetation around the deck before beginning your cleaning. Next either apply the sodium hypochlorite and soap mix through a backpack sprayer or through a 12-volt soft wash system until the desired surface to be cleaned is evenly covered. After applying the cleaning agent onto the composite deck allow the cleaning agent to dwell or sit on the deck for 7 to 12 minutes. By allowing this dwell time to transpire you will notice all of the organic debris and growth such as lichen, mold or mildew turn white and start to die.
The next step of the cleaning process is using a pressure washer with a low-pressure tip to rinse off the deck. It is imperative to use this low-pressure tip so that damage does not occur to the composite deck. This process of using cleaning agents to clean and low pressure to rinse is by far the superior method to cleaning and preserving the life of your deck and long-term investment.
